I voted for New York. Between the Adirondacks, Catskills, Thousand Islands, Finger Lakes, Great Lakes and Niagara Falls its hard to argue that any state west of the Rockies has more natural beauty than New York State.

In addition to being more consistently scenic than North Carolina, New York has a greater quantity of quaint, charming towns, from Greenport to Chatham to Rouse's Point to Pultneyville to Youngstown to Westfield to Aurora -- quite literally every inch of the state.
What is interesting is that both of these states are essentially the same in land area, NY seems to pack more in from the population to the natural landmarks like those previously mentioned, as well as lesser known features like Letchworth State Park, many gorges, Chimney Bluffs, waterfalls, palisades, etc.
The vegetation point is interesting. I agree NY has a little more forested/protected land and pine forests can get repetitive. But perhaps NC makes up for it be having a longer growing season. In April everything will still be barren in Upstate while NC is blooming.
Something else that comes to mind is the freshwater lake options in NY. What are the equivalents in NC? I know the OP mentioned ocean and mountains, which both have, but I’m curious as to what would be on par with the Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, Oneida Lake, Lake Champlain, Chautauqua Lake, etc. in NC.
I would say North Carolina is more dramatic in it’s Western reaches, but New York State is far more consistent.
Agreed. My first thought was that NC would win because I immediately thought of the mountains which are far more scenic than NY mountains imo. But then I though how the large majority of NY is scenic and the large majority of NC is meh, and I think that NY wins because of variety and consistency. NC has no answer for NYs lakes, rivers, and Niagara Falls.
There's no denying that there is a lot of beauty in North Carolina. But I do agree with many folks here that New York State just has more of it. And yes, NC really doesn't have an answer to Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, or the Hudson River Valley.
Now, if this were the "where would you rather live?" thread, my answer would be reversed.
