I thought Edmonton and Winnipeg were part of the WHA merger that took all but two teams from that league: the Cincinnati Stingers and the Birmingham Bulls.
As an aside, Bham likes its normal, everyday entertainment cheap (The quality of free/low cost things to do in the area is absurdly high, so it's a bit spoiled in that regard), so I don't think a professional team is quite a right fit. It's a place that would much prefer a minor league in every possible sport. If the people splurge, it's more for a single event than a season, unless it's college football. So it'd prefer to its big local things to be parts of different National/World Circuits than a sport with a sustained season. Think Talladega races, Barbour Motorway races, or, to a much lesser extent, Oak Mountain as part of the Xterra World Cup. Having a constant schedule of things like that is much more up its alley.
Chkthankgod was correct and you are too. The WHA started play in 1972 and ended in 1979. So the history of the WHA was only 7 seasons.
That is correct. However, the WHL also started in the 1970s, so I still have a hard time calling those legacy markets since the NHL had already gone through several rounds of expansion. Much like the NBA-ABA merger, one league was much larger with a longer period of success and history.
It might be negligible, but if we're talking about smaller cities that could get an expansion team, then I think it is relevant since the NHL does have a history going into smaller markets.
One wonders if returning a team to Quebec City would be entirely out of the question for the NHL
Replace NFL with MLB. The Angels are almost as much of a little brother to the Dodgers as the Clippers are to the Lakers. While the Rams are the bigger deal vs the Chargers, the Rams aren’t as dominate in LA as the Dodgers, Lakers, and even Kings (relatively speaking) are. Had the Raiders moved to LA instead the Chargers, they’d be the dominate team in LA similar to Dodgers and Lakers.
When Arte Moreno first bought the Angels, it seemed like he had aspirations to make that team Dodgers-level in terms of 'status'. That Albert Pujols contract backfired pretty massively, and I'm not sure if that caused a change in philosophy on his part
In the MLS, the LA Galaxy used to be arguably the most marquee team in the league, attracting world superstars such as David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the tail end of their illustrious careers (Zlatan happens to be my favorite soccer player to watch, ever). But in the past 5 years or so, LAFC has been one of the best teams in the league, and the atmosphere at their games looks tremendous, with what appears to be heavy Latino support, judging by TV shots of the crowd. I'd like to catch one of their games within the next couple years
