Not sure who Dementor/DNCR is referencing, but Chicago is at the very heart of the Rust Belt.
If Chicago isn't Rust Belt, then nothing is.
Yes, it's doing somewhat better than some smaller cities, but the Census lists Chicago as 1. Highest population loss since 2000 and 2. Highest job loss since 2000.
It's a small wonder it took to the second page for anyone to mention Houston. That's OK, we had to avoid the housing bubble one way or another and if being hot, flat and boring does the trick, then all the better. Although that didn't work for Florida somehow.
Gosh, for some reason Midwest cities dont fair to well at city-data forumns. Dont know why. Even Indy doesnt seem to do well. Nonetheless, the top 5 cities I would not want to live (if I can only pick 5) are:
