This was tough. In the end I chose Seattle, when it's not raining it sure looks to be a beautiful place. How can anyone pass up an opportunity to be that close to the Cascades and Pacific Ocean?
Seattle is definitely cleaner and safer than Philly. But Philly is close to NYC and D.C. So for that reason alone I'd have to go with Philly. Since money is not an issue per OP's statement, then one could afford to live in the nicer part of Philly.
Phily is, for the most part- a really dumpy depressing city.
Out of curiosities sake could you tell us what percentage of Philadlephia is "really depressing and dumpy"? Could you define "for the most part"? Are we talking 99%-90%-50.0001 %. Do tell, seeing how from afar(Lincoln Nebraska) you are connoisseur on all things Philadelphia.
I dont mind taking criticism from SF,NYC,Chi but when cornhuskering yahoos start yapping I begin to get rattled.

In all due respect to NYC and Washington, Philadlephia doesnt need their close proximity to be a great city. Thats not what Philadlephia is all about, Philadlephia stands on its own.
^Dude, your stereotypes of Philly are so wrong. Philly is one of the oldest cities in America, so of course it isn't going to be Atlanta. Yes, it is going to have old rundown sections of the city. However, most of Philly is historical, soulfull, and absoultly full of urban beauty. Take your ignorant sunglasses off, and try to open up to studying other cities with actual real architecture and history.
I lived in Philly. I met some of the most down to earth real people there. They are not arrogant, snobby, and secluded like you find out west.
And what is up with using the term "dumpy". I just think it is a term used by people who have no idea what real urban scenes are, and are use to strip malls along a 4 lane highway, chain stores, and gated subdivisions of cul-de-sacs as a "urban" city.
^Dude, first of all you have no idea who you are speaking to. Secondly, I have actually BEEN to both - so no study is called for.
I calls them as I sees them - and I don't believe a personal attack on my adopted residence is called for.
I assume you are just regurgitating what others have said on this forum re: strip malls along a 4 lane highway, chain stores, and gated subdivisions of cul-de-sacs. Are you describing your preconceived notions of Atlanta, or suburban Philadelphia?
