Overall, I would choose West LA for things to do and more culture, especially if its only for a few years. The other thing is that it is close to LAX with easy access all over the world, rather than having to take a connecting flight from San Diego. San Diego might win with a slightly lower cost of living and quality of life, but I already lived there once for 10 years and I got bored there after awhile.
