I'm certainly glad there aren't too many highrises along our coast. That would suck.

Really? I've never heard of this. I believe you (since there really are not any high-rises on the coast) but I just never heard of this. Of course in Santa Monica it is impossible to build tall due to NIMBYs. But Santa Monica's mid-rise skyline is pretty nice.

The height limit is something around 30 feet I think. It was enacted when they formed the CA Coastal Commission in the 70's, that's why any high rise you see along the coast are old and has that 50's/60's style.

I can see why along much of the coast you have this. Most places have hills/slopes where you have great ocean views. But I think the LA/OC coastline should allow high rises because much of the coastline is flat and there is nobody's view you're blocking east of the ocean in many places. Whose view's would you be block in Hermosa/Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach, etc..? I don't think anyone in the hills above Whittier or La Habra can see the ocean lol.

The coastal area around LA is protected, there are air-space rights that
don't allow to block ocean views.

Yep, what you see in Miami will never happen in California. The California Coastal Commission is very powerful, they control and approve all coastal construction including single family houses.

Really. I agree with their premise, but think there should be a few highrise zones. While views can be blocked, it also provides more housing next to the beach and part of their creed is to maximize access and recreational use of California's beaches. If you purchase a building site or an old house on the beach and want to do a major remodel, be prepared for a lengthy approval process and strict guidelines.

I'm pretty sure you can Google worlds most iconic, beautiful, best, stunning, impressive etc.......skylines and Chicago will show up every time, not only that, but a lot of times in the top 5 worldwide. You'll have a hard time finding a list that doesn't have Chicago in the top 10. Put the drugs down people.
