List the top three cities in the North, South and West that you would prefer to live. If you could not see yourself moving to and being happy in any city that is in a entire region (even for a vacation house) then just leave it blank. I will start!

NORTH

1. NYC
2. Chicago
3. Boston

South

1. Miami
2. Dallas
3. Houston

West

1. LA
2. Phoenix
3. Vegas
I am proud of you NYC. I didn't know you liked anything in the South. LOL! Just picking at you.

I grew up in Houston, and have lived in many other parts of the country. The issue of cities like Houston and Dallas being "southern" is just as hotly debated by their inhabitants as it is by everyone else. My opinion is that prior to the 70's those 2 cities could have definitely been classified as southern, but in the last 40 years or so have seen so much growth, immigration, and urbanization that the definition is a little more hazy and not as easy to pin down.

When I was going to school in Houston, half the kids in my homeroom class were from the midwest... and another good-sized cross-section were from southeast Asia. As a native Texan I was outnumbered everywhere I went. I also remember experiencing culture shock any time I drove into Louisiana, or even to Beaumont. The differences were very obvious.

I agree with what a few others have said here about only the easternmost region of Texas being truly southern, as well as the rest of Texas not being truly southwestern (except for maybe El Paso). Texas is a unique collision of regional culture. It's where the south meets the southwest, and the great plains meet the Mexican border. Hispanic and latino culture and architecture are a major factor almost everywhere in Texas, unlike the truly southern states, not to mention Texas was actually a part of Mexico for many years.

In conclusion, I'd say Texas is just Texas. As for the topic of the thread:

NORTH

1. Philly
2. Baltimore
3. Ithaca

South

1. New Orleans
2. Asheville, NC
3. Charleston, SC

West

1. Seattle
2. Los Angeles
3. San Francisco
