I just got back from a weekend in nyc, and did a lot of touring of Brooklyn. I think there are many similarities between these two wonderful cities.
Has anyone else noticed any similarities between the two?
Yes, I think there may be similarities between sections of Chicago and Brooklyn. You're comparing the totality of Chicago with a portion of NY and of course Chicago is much bigger than Brooklyn.
A more apt and accurate comparison would be Chicago's North Side (a comp. I've heard before) and Brooklyn.
Yeah, I always think of Brooklyn as the north side equivolent and Queens as the south side equivolent (the stable, non bombed out, neighborhoods of the south side anyways).

How do you figure Chicago is much bigger than Brooklyn? here are the stats:
Brooklyn: 70 sq mi / 2.5 million
Chicago: 227 sq mi / 2.8 million
Brooklyn is much much denser than Chicago, it has almost the same population in 1/3 the area.
Anyway, I think Williamsburgh and Wicker Park have a lot in common, also Park Slope and Gold Coast, Red Hook and West Loop, Prospect Heights and Uptown. I think they are pretty similar.

Brooklyn is part of New York City, it's not it's own city. And no, I never seen or felt any similarity in that regard.

Brooklyn is one of the 5 Boroughs of NYC, and it hasn't been a city since 1898. But, both have an amazing history, and I can understand why most people see Brooklyn and Chicago as being similar.
^^^ It has to do with history. Brooklyn at one point, was an independent city from NYC-which at the time was only the island of Manhattan-so Brooklyn grew independently from Manhattan. In 1894, Manhattan (NYC), the city of Brooklyn, the County of Richmond (Staten Island ), the County of Queens, and southern Westchester (The Bronx) voted to become the modern day city of New York.
The reason why Brooklyn can feel independent from NYC to this day is because, well, it was. The same could be said about the other Boroughs.
