Historically, the Connecticut River Valley has grown some of the finest tobacco in the nation in large volumes and still does. So I'm not sure how you reconcile that with "South".
I didn't say that tobacco is exclusive to the South, nor did I imply that. I only said that I'm familiar with it as historically being a staple crop for both NC and VA.
Tobacco is historically a Southern crop though, they grow peaches in Michigan but you usually think of Georgia when it comes to them.
I'm surprised you know this, most out-of-staters don't. We grow a lot of peaches, and Michigan could just as easily be called the "Peach State" (Great Lakes State fits us better, though). Form what I've found, Michigan peaches are better tasting than ones from Georgia or California.

The only reason I know is because when the freeze came through and damaged crops, my hubby and I stopped at a farmer's market here and they had ordered their peaches from Michigan

Yea but the implication was Maryland was "Northern" because of it's "crops" vs Richmond.
I was simply pointing out what you did...it's not always what it seems. Most folks are shocked to find out Southern CT has a Mid-Atlantic climate and oh lookie, the rest of the state isn't buried in 5 feet of snow and cold as MN!
Memphis has Arkansas to the west...a southern state.
Texarkana, maybe.
