Most Republicans live in urban and suburban areas.

It doesn't seem accurate that Cincinnati would be considered more conservative than a couple of its satellite cities, which are less diverse and have a more traditional industry based economy. Voting patterns comparing Hamilton County (Cincinnati) vs. Butler County (Middletown & Hamilton cities) certainly do not suggest this.

Absolutely, especially in the south. Greenville is 60% + Republican.

Most cities in the South that are not suburbs are not Republican.

What's the basis for this?

In the last Presidential Election, these were the top 5 MA towns for either candidate:

Clinton:
  • Cambridge: 89.2% Clinton | 6.5% Trump
  • Provincetown: 88.1% Clinton | 8.8% Trump
  • Brookline: 84.9% Clinton | 11.1% Trump
  • Somerville: 84.6% Clinton | 10.5% Trump
  • Amherst: 84.1% Clinton | 8.6% Trump

Trump:
  • Tolland: 61.9% Trump | 32.9% Clinton
  • Russell: 58.5% Trump | 33.9% Clinton
  • Blandford: 58% Trump | 36.8% Clinton
  • Southwick: 57.3% Trump | 36.1% Clinton
  • Granville: 57.2% Trump | 35% Clinton

In 2016, Nantucket (by a 65-30% margin), Raynham, and Seekonk (but neighboring Rehoboth and Swansea went to Trump) all went to Clinton. Westfield is the only CITY in MA that voted for Trump and that was by a 48-44% margin. So I guess you could say Westfield is the most conservative city and I'd say that much of Central MA and Southeast MA would be the more conservative regions. Take a look at the interactive map.

St. Cloud is the "conservative" city in Minnesota. It's in the heart of Minnesota's 6th Congressional District (formerly Michele Bachmann territory) and people in St. Cloud have a history of intolerance with the Somali community. The New York times even wrote a piece about the right-wing racism that plagues society there.

Republicans win most of the high population counties in SC and close to 50 percent in Charleston County I believe.

Even if the urban area residents are majority Democrat, there are a ton of suburban Republicans working in the urban areas and in the downtown area after work and on weekends.

Main Street in Greenville would be pretty dead without Republican suburban residents going down there.

Perhaps so in SC, but in Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina that isn’t the case.
