if you're comparing just downtown l.a. To downtown atlanta, then i'll go with downtown l.a. But if we're comparing dtla, century city, hollywood, wilshire, westwood combined vs. Dtatl, midtown, buckhead, atlantic station combined then i'll go with atlanta.
San Diego is hours away no wonder you couldn't see them LOL
but in all respect to LA the smog has gotten considerably better the last decade..I've seen the mountains every time I've been in the past year.
I have to agree with my pueblo friend. Everytime I was in LA I never saw any mountains. I do remember hills east of LA. I was just in LA too. That one pic w/ the snow capped mountains has to be incorrectly sized. If LA was 20 miles away from those mountains (even with 14k ft peaks) then the pic's mountains should look more like Denvers backdrop...
What are those alleged mountains called so I can look them up?

Those "alleged" mountains are the San Gabriels..
I guess you have to spend time here to see them considering you can see them from LB
these pics are from themindofjustin.com
Taken from Signal Hill in Long Beach
taken in Belmont Shores ( a Long Beach neighborhood)
Of course there not always this clear and that's after quite a bit of snow.
Do you have any info on the distance from downtown? I notice all the pics showing the mountains need to be taken from a higher POV. Perhaps that is why I never noticed them. Also, those mountains arent that tall so them seem magnified by the POV. You got any pics from downtown or around? I noticed the harbor pic greatly decreased the backdrop.
No I don't but and I couldn't find any pics of being able to see them from ground view if I find some I will post but your right you are less likely to see them from downtown on ground (if at all) like you can see the Rockies in CO. And Belmont is a good 28 miles from Downtown.
Yeah photos can be tricky when showing a mountain backdrop. Just look at this absurd photo of SLC. I lived there and there's no way you can get this POV from anywhere in the city.
Atlanta's skyline is a lot more impressive than LA's skyline.
The best shots of LA has never been its skyline; rather it's from the top of one of the surrounding foothills at night when you see nothing but a sea of lights. That's by far one of the more iconic images of LA.

Two of those photos (top and bottom) were most likely taken from Kenneth Hahn State Recreation area off La Cienega Blvd. The middle one has to be from a plane b/c its looking east. I've been to spots where you it looks like those pics with the mountains rising so dramatically in the background, sometimes I almost wreck when I driving and starting the the view, haha.
great pics BTW Golden State!
