Livewire, I thought you liked small towns... - Sorry, I had to get you on that one.

In case you didn't know, population-wise, Montreal is the second largest city in Canada, it's even bigger than Phoenix, but the entire Montreal metro area is about the same as the Phoenix metro area, population-wise that is, so it's not the small town you've always favored.

Geneva; it's a beautiful city in the middle of everything Europe has to offer.

Marseille! On the sea! Close to Provence.

Montreal or Geneva. Both beautiful cities. Geneva is pricey though!

I haven't been to Montevideo or Brisbane, so I'm not sure about those. I love Switzerland, but Geneva itself is rather boring IMO (not to mention expensive). I also love the south of France, but Marseille is pretty...ghetto (I'd much rather live in Nice ).

I have to go with Montreal. It's close to home (about 3.5 hours by car) and my ancestors are from Quebec, so I feel a strong attachment to the region. It's a great mix of North American and European, French and English cultures. Old Montreal, while smaller than Quebec City, is still charming. But the city itself just offers so much.

Granted, the winters are brutal, but not much worse than what I'm used to.
