I agree with Krudmonk and Coldwine have said. While SF is more sophisticated and prettier I don't think its more cosmopolitan than LA. LA is huge and more diverse, its just not the prettiest looking city on the outside.

Yeah. Cosmopolitanism is a lot more dirty, chaotic and grungy than the well-lacquered image San Francisco tries to air.

SF tries to air that image but it doesn't really mean it's true. SF has had a higher crime rate than LA for a few years now (and was actually neck and neck with LA's crime rate back in the early/mid 90's), and there's no shortage of graffiti, litter, old crumbling roads, even in some of the nice/touristy areas.
As far as diversity, LA probably does have SF beat. If we're talking the entire Bay Area though, I'd say they're about equal all things considered.
Apparently some people on here misunderstand what cosmopolitan means and implying it means sophisticated.
Not even going to get into it...
LA is much more cosmopolitan... SF is pretty much super white collar white, and asian.
When posting I always refer to city proper, unless otherwise stated.
That being said, the terms cosmopolitan, sophisticated, and international get misconstrued on this board ALL the time and would paint a very different image of cities than they actually are for somebody that has never been there. I knew this was going to be the case in this thread also as soon as I saw the OP use the slang "cosmo."
Personally I think this board should have a sticky with what certain terms mean before posting on here.
A city doesn't need to be full of people from all over the world to be cosmopolitan, Tokyo is very cosmopolitan and it's pretty much exclusively populated by ethnic Japanese.
