compton looks like a tropical resort today compared to a lot of other northern cities' ghettos. now back in the 80's...forget about it! newark is a cess pool but nothing matches detroit when it comes to anything bad.

Could not find the 2008 list, but this is 07:
Safest and Most Dangerous U.S. Cities, 2007 — Infoplease.com
Detroit # 1
Compton #14
Newark # 20

But I know, stats don't matter.

I can't speak for Detroit or Compton, but Newark is on the up turn. With a young mayor who is focus on jobs, urban development, and cracking down on crime and renewal projects such as the Prudential Center, Newark is making its way back.

I would say:

Detroit
Compton
Newark

Newark used to be horrible, and still is bad, but it has improved a lot over the years. Compton has also improved, but the crime is still ridiculously high. It has one of the highest murder rates in the country. As far as decay I would put Detroit 1st, Newark 2nd, and Compton 3rd. Detroit and Newark are both much larger than Compton, so they do have some nice or average neighborhoods, Compton is all bad.

stats say nyc is the safest city in america, right? they say camden is one of the worse. does that mean nyc's bad areas are safer than camden's? no. nyc has ghettos that are either on par or worst than camdens. but, the majority of nyc has good areas so its considered safer than camden. see what im saying? there are areas in newark that put comptons bad areas to shame.

I think compton is worse then Newark, because of comptons suburban look. In Newark and Detroiot you can TELL you're in a bad neighborhood just by looking at the decay. In Compton because they have nice middle class neigborhhods you'll never tell you're in a gang infested area because the LOOK of the neighborhood can be VERY decieving. You may see semi nice houses and think you're in a safe neighborhood, BUT in reality you're in the one of the most violent notorious gang infested neighborhoods in LA county. It's the same way with MOST of south central LA. Looks can be VERY decieving.

It has to do with the population. Simply put: NYC has a population of over 8.2 million. Camden, NJ; has a population of about 80,000. When the FBI does it crime reports, it calculate the number of crimes divided by 100,000. NYC population is 100,000 x 82. Camden doesn't even have 85,000 people in it's area. So, NYC is able to "swallow" the number of crimes that has happend because of it's large population. Camden has a far fewer incident of crimes, but it's population is so low, it sticks out even more.

Newark and Detriot are large, major cities that have been hit hard with urban decay as the result of job loss and white flight. Compton has only been around since the mid to late 1800s and have never had the chance to develop like cities in the East, mainly because of LA. Compton has been hit hard with the loss of jobs and a high poverty rate. This can be explained as to why that city has a high crime rate.
