It really depends on where the person is from, what they're expecting, and how long they expect to stay.

There are some fairly interesting smaller cities that can be really eye-opening for someone who has never been to the US that might feel more interesting in some ways than going to one of the top 10 largest cities that usually get bandied about.

Of the large major cities, I'd probably recommend NYC and DC in there, but the rest of it would be a mix of some of the other popular major cities (Chicago, LA, SF, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia) and some mix of smaller cities that are interesting in themselves and/or great jumping off points to some of the great natural scenery in the US such as Portland, other Portland, Santa Fe, Taos, Madison, Burlington, New Orleans, Louisville, Charleston, Asheville etc.

You make a good case. If we are looking at 5 cities that best represent the US then only 5 cities is too difficult and limiting. US is too big and diverse to limit to five cities. I think you could group them in a specific way and pick and choose what's more important to you:

What these groups represent:
Colonial cities from the Brits: Boston and Philly

Colonial cities from French/Spanish: New Orleans (I separate from the above because it's a very different colonial city.

US World City and Beastmode city: New York City

Major city that feels the most "American": Chicago

Tropical/Very International Cities: Miami and Honolulu

Europe and US had a baby in the Mediterranean: San Francisco

Capital of Media and Entertainment in a Mediternean setting: Los Angeles

The capital and museum of the US: DC

America's version of an adult playground city: Las Vegas

African-American Capital: Atlanta

I feel like there are so many different cities that offer so many different things for foreign tourists. I guess it depends what you want to see.

Nope, it has nothing to do with marketing. It doesn't work that way in London at all, because it is not in America. American cities aren't marketed proficiently here, if at all.

It is the strength of industry that ties London to Boston. Financial services and the like. Boston is a huge player and is in London's immediate network with other cities such as Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Toronto, Tokyo, and a few others. Lots of on-going projects, asset management, private equity firms, Bio-Science firms, Nanotechnology firms, legal firms, private investors, venture capitalists, the entirety of the Fin-Tec industry (London is the global Fin-Tec capital), and the like collaborate between the two areas, so there is a substantial amount of interflow between London and Boston.

The numbers below are Origin and Destination numbers (O&D numbers) between London and these selected American cities. What "Origin and Destination" measures are travelers between two cities. These are people that go from London to these American cities with the intention of that city being their final destination and vice versa right on back.

This will give you a good idea where Londoners go in America and a good idea which cities in America have the strongest ties to London (as in people from these cities come to London as well).

Annual O&D Market Travelers to/from London, United Kingdom:
- New York: 2,451,521
- Los Angeles: 712,978
- San Francisco Bay Area: 542,441
- Boston: 512,648
- Miami: 476,010
- Washington DC: 470,132
- Las Vegas: 452,610
- Chicago: 377,523
- Houston: 227,883
- Atlanta: 185,587
- Philadelphia: 152,350
- Tampa: 137,387
- Dallas: 132,512
- Seattle: 126,514
- Denver: 121,891
- Detroit: 104,398
- Minneapolis: 95,014
- Phoenix: 75,438
- San Diego: 72,196
- Portland: 35,469
- New Orleans: 30,191
- Saint Louis: 28,417
- Cleveland: 24,532

The Brookings Institution got these numbers from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration - an arm of the United States Government). So these numbers are as legit as they get.

Here is the most recent 2015 update to his city brand index research, he no longer details each country and the specifics but does have a top 10 list overall. The following are the American cities in that Top 10.

Best reputations/most admired globally in 2015, the Top 10:
03. New York
05. Los Angeles
10. Washington D.C.

Paris wins back
Interesting that DC didn't make the North American top 10 in 2013 for any country despite being in the 2015 overall top 10. Similarly Montreal didn't make any top 10's. Not even for France. How could such things happen?

Because Washington and Montreal were not evaluated in 2013. Washington was omitted that one year, for reasons that I don't know, it has been in every study before that and every study after that.

Below are the North American cities that were evaluated for 2015 though:

North America: Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, Toronto, Washington D.C.

Paris wins back

Dallas was taken out and replaced with Dallas-Fort Worth in 2015. This marks the first time Denver and Houston have been evaluated as well.

I'm seeing one major trend among those lists and it's finance.

If a particular city is a big player in finance, it is most likely going to do well.

Which is disappointing.

To tell you the truth most Europeans from what I've seen don't really have any interest in seeing much of America or its cities. The list of actual cities they appear to have an interest in is very short, like maybe 2-3 cities at most.

See there's no need for Orlando here. Disneyland has a themepark in Paris. There's no need for Las Vegas here, lots of cities have legal gaming and plus there's places like Monte Carlo significantly closer to us. There's no need for a beach destination like Hawaii here, there are several areas in the Mediterranean or other islands closer to us.

Most of the reason people from Europe get around to visiting most American cities is due to 1) work in the industry or 2) family or friends.

There isn't really a strong desire for people here to see Boston, not to pick on Boston in particular, but yeahh. What does Boston actually have that we cannot already get around us here? However Boston is a very important city economically speaking, in several key global industries, so it tends to "draw" lots of visitors from here regardless.

This I can agree with.

New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles hold the primary interest for 90% of foreigners.

Most other cities are based on economic interest if anything or are niche cities like Orlando or Las Vegas.

So you think "from what I've seen" automatically translates to reality? That's just your experience...the US is crawling with Europeans. They travel extensively and brag about it. They are aware that there is more to the US than NYC, LA, and SF...give them some credit.
