In other words do you believe that if you live in a liberal minded area such as California, you will be more accustomed to think liberal? Or if you live in an area that is full of snobs, you will start picking up on their mannerisms?

Any input is appreciated.

Elaborate on it.

Thx.

Absolutely yes. You are affected by your surroundings. You may however develop the absolute opposite reaction: after moving to a very conservative area you may start feeling even more liberal being repulsed by some of the things you see and hear.

Yes and No. It completely depends on the person and how much they soak up their surroundings and how much they they continue to stay them self. Some might get wrapped up in their surroundings while others will stay the same and true to who they really are no matter what. Some people change after living somewhere else for awhile and others do not.

Of course. I lived outside NYC in a pretty open-minded area. No real racial tension, discrimination, etc. I guess that could be the reason why I try to fight for equality so much and why I find it really sad when I see discrimination.

Also, there's the typical NY attitude lol. Nearly everyone I know has it.

Living somewhere most certainly can influence you.

To some extent, but it is important to note that this is not a general rule. On one hand, you can say that California is a solid liberal state, but then all of a sudden prop 8 passes. And even in rural Texas there are blue voters.

I think that life circumstances, experience, upbringing and education level are bigger influences than just location. For example - land a $250k job and all of a sudden liberal tax policies don't look as good. Befriend an illegal immigrant and your views on immigration may change, etc.

I have always been a person that stays true to themselves...but I know that being true to yourself includes being true to where you come from. It is inevitable that your environment will dictate to some extent who you are.

Although family and friends can influence you, your surrounding environment can too of course. I'll give an example. I teach in the south Bronx where I have many troubled students. I have a few who come from good, educated families with no serious problems (as do many of my students' families). They surprise me at times with some things that they get themselves into. I ask them why they did it, and they'll tell me they saw someone doing it on the street.
