What are some cities across the country that offer a lot for their size? Here in NY, I think Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton, Oneonta and Saratoga Springs.
Spokane. Not that big a city, great recreation.
The variety and specialization of businesses in that city always amaze me. Compared to most cities it's size back east, it has incredible variety and activity.
Of course, it does serve a relatively large geographic area.

I'm going to be a homer and throw out my city Lubbock. It offers many things you wouldn't expect for a town its size, especially in the fields of education, culture and healthcare. It's mainly due to the fact that it is the center for all of West Texas and eastern New Mexico.
Eugene, Oregon has a ton of cultural offerings that you wouldn't expect for a town its size and is very vibrant due to the presence of U of O.
