NYC is clearly heads and shoulders above the rest. Its really not even close. Im blown away by the consistency of NYCs density everytime I go there. For instance, even a relatively distant neighborhood like Bay Ridge in Brooklyn is still very dense.
Chicago has a dense core, but other parts of it I wonder "am I still in the city?" due to lack of density.
San Francisco has a very dense downtown and the entire city (not very big in area) has a pretty dense feel. Even smaller neighborhoods feel like thriving urban centers. Still, the scale is just waaay too small to compare to NYC.
This place did (1,923,077/km²). Thankfully, they tore it down. While I know that density is often touted as a good thing, and to a certain point, it is, when it comes to making an urban area work, but it can go too far.

NYC is clearly #1; after that I have a hard time picking #2...while Chicago's core is denser than LA's, I think LA's built environment is denser as a whole.
After NYC, CHI, LA I would say SF has the most dense built environment.
1. Union City, NJ - 52,972/sqmile
2. New York City, NY - 26,401/sqmile
3. Passaic, NJ - 21,803/sqmile
4. Huntington Park, CA - 20,251/sqmile
5. Somerville, MA - 18,867/sqmile
6. East Orange, NJ - 17,775/sqmile
7. Paterson, NJ - 17,674/sqmile
8. San Francisco - 16,633/sqmile
9. Jersey City, NJ - 16,093/sqmile
10 Cambridge, MA - 15,765/sqmile
^ That list is not really relevant to the thread though. Union City is physically tiny, and you would be out of your mind to think that their built environment is denser than NYC.
