I pick NY mainly because of its size and proximity to other states. Texas would rock if it were about 1/4 of its current size. Not only does NY have NYC, but it's close to New England and the other Mid-Atlantic states, and Canada (hello, Montreal!). In Texas it can take forever and a day just to leave the state, and you have to endure miles and miles of nothing much in between. And then where are you gonna go? Oklahoma? Louisiana? Mexico?? This is one of my major gripes with the state, in case you couldn't tell.

Best food and nightlife NY wins hands-down. I don't know what other aspects we're comparing though.

I've only been to NYC, never upstate. I've seen a good chunk of Texas. Based on that experience, I vote for NY State.

Texas is mostly known for BBQ...NY is known for having hundreds of ethnic foods, not to mention pizza and bagels

Texas has its regional BBQ, Tex-Mex, Southern/soul food, Cajun/Creole/Gulf Coast seafood, and hundreds of ethnic foods as well, minus pizza and bagels. But that's all right, we got chili dogs and Frito-pies.

Where do you people come up with these wacky X vs Y scenarios?

Not sure what "geographically varied" means, but in terms of physical landscape, I'd go with NY due to the mountains, rolling green hills and beaches. Food and nightlife are no contest...New York. Personally I don't see how this could be up for debate.

I know, I don't know how TX can even compete with NY's ethnic foods. The only states you really go to for true ethnic food are parts of CA and NY.

You don't have the faintest clue as to the available foods here in Texas if you think it's just about BBQ.
