I don't believe in the highrise count in Emporis anyways. They count all buildings over 12 stories which is very difficult to be accurate or keep up with the contructions. In another thread I cited the example of Shanghai to prove how wrong this number can be. According to Emporis, Shanghai only has 982 highrises (over 12 stories). That is obviously wrong compared to Chicago's 1000+ highrises by glancing over any picture of Shanghai. So I went online and looked up the website of Shanghai goverment, and found the following statistics for 2007:

11~15 stories 5515

16~19 stories 2739

20~29 stories 2425

over 30 stories 777

Even only counting buildings over 16 stories, Shanghai has 5941 buildings. Counting buildings over 11 stories Shanghai has 11456 buildings. You can do the math and see how wrong Emporis is. The error can't be so extreme for US cities but I just can't rely on their data.

http://www.stats-sh.gov.cn/2003shtj/tjnj/nj08.htm?d1=2008tjnj/C1004.htm (broken link)

I would only look at buildings over 100m, which I think is more reliable of Emporis, also they are mostly listed by wikipedia with a title of "list of tallest buildings in XX" for cities like Atlanta and Pilly which don't have many skyscrapers to be listed. Buildings below 90m have very little effect for the skyline anyways. I also look at the construction updates on skyscrapercity.com.

According to the Skyscraper Page Philly has 5 buildings over 200m. Atlanta has 12. Philly has 6 buildings between 150m and 200m tall. Atlanta has 8. Philly has 33 buildings built or proposed in height range 100m-150m. Atlanta has atleast 55.

I have quickly noticed the geographical bashing between the north and south on this site. The difference between the bashing is that Northeasterners defend their area when attacked by southerners, but when southerners are attacked they whine and try to play the victim. This thread is the perfect example of the……I can dish it out, but can’t take it mentality. Philly is a northeastern powerhouse and Atlanta is a sunbelt city trying to compete with cities on another level. Atlanta’s skyline spreads seven miles long and lacks density. The results of the poll display how Americans feel, give it up, you have lost. The city of Atlanta is weak and the skyline of Atlanta is weaker.

Right.Say all AMERICANS.The poll says so,So it must be true.LOL.So if you disagree its whining?Even when there are facts to support the argument?I also noticed how no one has been able to comment on the facts that I have presented.Yet instead you had to resort to name calling.I have been in this thread since it started and not ONCE on here have I read anyone say anything about Philly that was considered bashing.Yet starting with your comments have about southern cities.Especially Atlanta.Your statements about Atlanta being "weak" proves that there is some sort of rift of animosity that northern cities have.I did not hear anyone who say Philly was anything less than a "powerhouse".Yet it seems you emotions have caused you to blur reality.Atlanta has more Fortune 500 companies than any other city after NYC and Houston.

Atlantic is consider a powerhouse as well and is not that far behind Philly .So don't act as if Atlanta is just some sleepy little southern town.

Construction in Philly the last couple years. Not polished. New. There is more going on in Center City than just powerwashing and polishing. Its estimated that $20 B dollars of construction/ redevelopment is going on in Center City/University City over the past couple years. Heres a splash of what is happening.

Childrens Hospital Philadelphia expansion- $2 B dollars

Convention Center Expansion- 1 B dollars

Comcast Center - 500 M dollars

Cira Centre

Murano

Symphony House(Pink Building)

10 Rittenhouse

1706 Rittenhouse(silver building forefront)

Residence Ritz Carlton

Waterfront Square

Schuylkill Banks River Trail

naval square one of Toll Brothers few recent success stories.

U Penn Expansion

Drexel dormitory

$500 M Art Museum renovation

2 new casinos if the city didnt stonewall would have been $2 B worth of investment, as is there will be 2 scaled down casinos.

The City just swiped one of the wealthiest art galleries in the world from the Philly suburbs(Barnes Foundation) That is being built as we speak. $2 B collection.

Drexel, Penn, Temple, Thomas jefferson Universities are all on major expansion projects.

I'm not saying there isnt alot happening in Atlanta but what I am saying is that you dont have a firm grasp on what is occurring in Center Ciy Philly. To use the word polishing is misguided.

You have not presented any facts, just rambling nonsense. Who cares about fortune 500 companies, it must not be enough because Philly has 1,447,395 million people while Atlanta has 537,958. So, Philly is almost three times the size of Atlanta. The 2007 CSA reports that the Philly metro has 6,385,461 while Atlanta has 5,626,400. Atlanta counts towns into their MSA and CSA that are 45 minutes away from Atlanta. I can’t decide where to live? I live in New Jersey, which brings me access to Atlantic City, Philly, NJ (beaches), New York City and The Hamptons. Forty five minutes outside of Atlanta in all directions is nothing, but a small town filled with hillbillies. Also, thanks for the link, which proved that Philly was ahead of Atlanta. You need to accept the fact that Atlanta has lost this thread and will never be on the level of Philly. Atlanta needs to go play with Dallas, Houston, Miami and Seattle because Atlanta is on the level with those cities. You have not only lost the skyline thread, but you have also lost the….what city is better to live in thread. //www.city-data.com/forum/city-...ladelphia.html

Yeah, and Philly is on the level of those cities too.

I have said this before but I'll say it again: Atlanta can swing dense if it really wanted to with no problem because of the potential but it's all on the people, really.

Atlanta has been outcompeting Philly on a few levels for several years now.

Americans are voting with their feet, and in that respect, Atlanta is winning. If you think this poll is any real indicator in the real world, you're delusional.

And the city of Phoenix recently passed Philly. You honestly think that makes Phoenix a more important city than Philly?

Atlanta doesn't create its own metro area designations; the Census Bureau does, and due to commuting patterns, those cities are included in the MSA/CSA.

What's your point?

Well according to the way you judge cities based on city population, Philly isn't even on the level of Houston, since it's a bigger city, and Dallas's metro area is larger, so I guess it's not on Dallas's level either. Seriously, are you like 15?
