Years ago in Oregon, I met a college student from Europe, who was on an exchange program of some sort. I don't recall the details, but it was part of a group and the students did an initial rendezvouz in New York.
When she told everyone she was heading to Oregon, many of the other students' eyes just popped. They pictured her heading off to one of those dusty, tiny towns pictured in all of our westerns. They tried to talk her out of going, telling her that she'd be in great danger and that she'd need a gun. They had the idea that everyone was toting guns, bears were roaming the dirt roads and so on. They really didn't think civilization existed in Oregon.
Hysterical story - sorry I can't replicate it well.
