These three cities have a lot in common. They're all in the secondary state of their respected metro's. they are all near a body of water and they are all known for being blighted, crime ridden and in general not great places to live. If you had to pick one which would you pick? Some criteria to consider

1. Downtown
2. Safety
3. Housing/Architecture
4. Restaurants
5. Brightest future
6. Transportation
7. Scenery
8. Where would you rather live?

If I had to pick I’d live in Camden...closer to the part of the country I prefer.

Definitely Gary...the beach alone wins.

Haven't seen the beach in Gary, but am familiar with the other two cities.

Camden has more promise than East St. Louis by far, and it's closer to the core city than Gary is to Chicago.

The area closest to the Delaware River is actually pretty nice now. The downtown still needs work but isn't bereft of life.

There are still a number of sad neighborhoods there, but a surprising number of poor-but-proud ones as well.

Count me in the Camden crowd.

I'm with you there

Indiana Dunes is not far away and being near Lake Michigan would be great with me!

The Indiana Dunes extends a good 5 or so miles into Gary...My neighborhood of Miller Beach in Gary is very dunelandesque....most homes are on Dunes...and the area is thriving. Gary is some 5 times larger than either ESL or Camden...it has real solid assets that put it in a league well above the other 2.

WRT Camden: In area, yes; in population, no.

Camden has a little more than 74,000 residents; Gary, a little more than 76,000.

I suspect that some of this difference has to do with the fact that U.S. Steel built Gary as a model community around the massive steel mill it built there. Camden had no similar large industrial facility, but it did have a substantial industrial presence in its roughly 10 square miles.

I don't know what portion of Gary's land area is taken up by the steel mill, but I'll wager it's a sizable one.

+1, so many people are not familiar with that fact(s). I was actually born in Gary and I am very familiar with NW Indiana since I lived in the "Region" too.
