The Charles River running through Boston is actually now swimmable after a decade long cleanup...just don't take a dip after any rainstorms.

ROFL! Is that to say that there's a thick layer of nasty gunk just below the surface that gets churned up by the rain?

It's probably more the runoff. Urban runoff is disgusting, and a fixable problem. Of course, it doesn't really get fixed.

I was born on the banks of the Hudson and it sometimes looks very beautiful, it depends on the day. I suspect that's the case for a lot of the rivers people posted here, also, and that those rivers are as grey as the Hudson is on cloudier days. In any case, I will not be a "homer" and I will go with a river I have seen in person in one of my favorite cities:

The Rio Grande in Albuquerque, New Mexico! It IS a pretty muddy river, but still looks beautiful most of the time and doesn't look too muddy. Very impressive for a river in a DESERT. The surrounding landscape enhances its beauty. I think anyone who has seen it can vouch for the fact that it's a beautiful river.
