The MFA in Boston has 9174 paintings (and 450,000 0bjects) easily second largest
The Harvard Art Museum has 5708 paintings (and 250,000 objects)
The Philadelphia Museum of Art has 4402 paintings (And about 220,000 objects, also no ancient stuff all at PENN)
The National Gallery has 3532 paintings and not sure how many objects but it is NOT encyclopedic collection only has American European and Contemporary
The AIC has 2372 paintings and about 250,000 objects
MOMA in NYC has 2800 paintings AND sculptures (can not search for paintings alone) and 130,000 objects (again not encyclopedic)
So AIC while one of great museums in world is based on objective data, a smaller collection. IT does have second largest building space in North America. West Coast museums not even close in depth and breadth. Source for this is websites of each of these museums. easy to look up if you want to.
No one ever disputed that DC and NYC are clearly top 2.
The Art Institute of Chicago slight??? It has 260,000 pieces of Art.

not in total but yes much more there
Also, with the Rodin and Barnes next door is quite a set - the Barnes is probably the best collection of impressionist art in the world outside of Paris
Also I think you need to determine if looking at Museums on the whole or Art Museums - DC does really well on the former, among art museums is likely not as strong
The Smithsonian collection is pretty amazing though; nothing really like it anywhere in the US if at all
Minneapolis needs some love on this thread. Though it's certainly not number one, MPLS does have the Walker, which is my favorite museum in the world. Then consider that MPLS is home to the Weismen, the Sculpture Garden, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and that Scandinavian museum on Park Street that looks like a castle, and you have an awesome city that hits well for its size.
Here are my top five:
1) NYC
2 DC
3) Tie between San Francisco and Chicago (Chicago Institute of Arts trumps the Fine Arts Museums of SF, but the SF Museum of Modern Art trumps the Contemporary Art Museum, Chicago; great small galleries in both cities)
5) Minneapolis

Honorable mention: Boston, LA, Philly, Detroit
Most underrated in terms of museums: Dallas
Wow. Minneapolis gets number 5, but LA, Boston, and Philly only get honorable mentions? What a homer.

It's a different perspective, subjective, probably, but no less valid--more personal than anything. It's not like she had it at number one. And her location says Baltimore, so I don't see how that's being a homer...
