I like LA better because it has better museums, more shopping options (Beverly Hills+South Coast Plaza is divine, only NYC can compare), more movie theater and other theater choices, more authentic Chinese food. SF has a beautiful skyline and better public transportation, but, I am just the kind of the larger the better person. Having more options is always good for me, and I don't mind driving that much. I'd like to go to movies and museums and shopping and restaurants in my spare time so these are my only concerns. The density thing, only works for me if it makes the city feel larger. SF feels larger than Detroit (not actually larger), but definitely still a lot smaller than LA, in terms of everything. And I don't think I want to state again LA's metro density is larger than SF, even than NYC.

LA is more exciting and vital and of course the weather is 100 times better (unless you are one of those who gets the vapors if it's over 70 and thinks having cold clammy clothing adhering to your body is romantic). On the other SF is more relaxed and enjoyable at a slow pace. You can walk just about anywhere in SF and pretty much everything in LA has to be driven to. LA has more cultural offerings, the ones available in SF are more sophisticated. LA is up-to-the-minute, SF has the force of history behind it. Really is a very personal choice.
