Capital of NC. Seems very clean and polished. Good tree canopy. Underwhelming Downtown relative to the size of the city and area. Safe.

NEXT: Florence, AL

There's a restaurant called Ricatoni's downtown, but despite it's name, that's about it in terms of any semblance of a "Little Italy", something that's hard to come by in that part of the country, though it punches above its weight in terms of cultural institutions, especially by AL standards, and combined with Muscle Shoals, is quite underrated as a place to visit/live. The main reason is that it tends to be overlooked is because the nearest freeway is over 40 miles away (I-65), I'd wish I-565 would be extended so it could eventually connect with Huntsville, creating a mini-power region along the Tennessee River for over 60 miles.

Michael Jackson and his siblings were raised there. Near Chicago. Cold and snowy.

A small town in southern West Virginia? Just scrolling the Wiki page, it looks like the only thing that ever happened there was in 1960 when Kennedy and Humphrey coincidentally ended up there at the same time while campaigning and had an impromptu chat.

Smithtown, NY

Hmmm, a city in long island, so I imagine historic, yet suburban in nature. Life revolves around being in close proximity to NYC. I wiki'd it and didn't come up with much.

Irvine, Ca

Named after a company in the 60's, I think of it as very busy and corporate Orange County suburb and home of the El Torro Y freeway interchange (I-5/I-405), it's nuts!

Scottsdale, AZ

Cody is the quintessential old Western cowboy town and the eastern gateway to Yellowstone country.

* On a side note, Cody will always hold a special spot in my heart. My family was from FL, but loved to travel west in the summer and had a cabin above the Buffalo Bill Reservoir up from the highway that burnt down in the Great Yellowstone Fire in 1988. My grandmother was best friends with the old owner of the Irma Hotel and my grandfather dropped dead of a heart attack on Main Street on the 4th of July in 1968. Recently I drove through with my wife and when we pulled up in town, it literally smelled like steak!

NEXT: Boone, NC
