Very modern and sprawling, bazillions of tourists, hot and humid, flat.
Laredo, TX
Very hispanic/Mexican, pretty isolated from the rest of Texas, very hot and dry. Does not seem like a particularly desirable place to live other than crime not being too bad.

The biggest city in Kansas' empty quarter. Used to be home to a major Air Force base. Not as historic as Dodge City or Abilene.
Beautiful area, love Dungeness Spit (the beach) and the crab! The Olympic Peninsula has amazing scenery.
Deadwood, SD
I think, don't make the same mistake I did and decide on a whim to move to Montana with only what you could fit in you car and drive through the Black Hills not knowing Sturgis is a thing at the wrong time. Nightmare scenario. It kind of ruined the Black Hills for me.
Haven't been in quite awhile (maybe 12 years??) but visited often enough growing up that I have a pretty good idea of what it's like. That said, I understand that downtown has "exploded" quite a bit over the past decade, at least for a midsized city, and exploding simply meaning a bit of infill, adaptive reuse, and overall more activity. It's a pretty good town for what it is, capital of a major state, home to two large universities, but still rather moderate in size. Also has some hills, which is unusual in FL.
College town just south of Salt Lake City. Pretty topography.
Champaign, IL
College town a few hours south of Chicago; Big 10 university surrounded by corn fields and soybeans in all directions..
