One of my close friends went to Duke, and enjoyed it massively. And, it is a mere 4 hour drive away from Virginia Beach, site of the first modern battleship battle (Monitor vs. Merrimack).
Old Town Alexandria is pretty cool. Like a little slice of New England dropped onto the Potomac. And being basically an extension of Washington, DC, you can't beat it.
