turned itself around , and it's common knowledge that it was called
the "murder capitol of America" and was renowned for it's high
crime rate until just recently. Now in the renaissance that DC is
currently in the middle of Washington is indeed riding high , but
didn't D.C. lose population for about 50 years , that doesn't sound
like Washington D.C. was very desirable during that period. Now
let me touch on the"tourist question" with all of the National
Treasures , Monuments , Museums shouldn't Washington be
our's number one tourist destination , now don't get MAD I'm
not mad at You I've learned a lot from you sir or madame.
First, DC is probably the LAST city that you would want to judge from 40 years ago. It's nothing like that. Yea, it was the murder capital in the 80s and early 90s, but that's because it had 500 murders in one year. This past year it was at 130 I think. This year it's already off to an even better start. I've never seen a city that has so much construction and gentrification going on at once. It's now the 3rd most expensive city in the country and that's because a lot of people want to live here. It's a large city that's now considered a world-class city by most. However, it's till different enough from most large cities which is why people are attracted to it.

And 14thandyou doesn't understand the tourist thing you brought up because we don't see what you're getting at. It IS one of the top tourist destinations in the country. So what's the problem.

Washington DC has always been a Gamma World Class City , that
is right now a solid Beka (WCC) which is smack dab in the middle of
a Renaissances pretty much like New York City 1990's to present.
The fact that it lost population during a 50 years or more period of
time is something that can't be over looked , just don't act like this
was going on in DC over the last 50 years.

And 14thandyou doesn't understand the tourist thing you brought up because we don't see what you're getting at. It IS one of the top tourist destinations in the country. So what's the problem.
I was just wondering why Washington hasn't knocked NYC
Times Square out of the number one position in the tourist
ranking list that's all , this would be a golden opportunity with
all of the National Treasures of DC.The West Coast is going
through a population boom and west coast sites are going
to rise on the list in the next 10 to 30 years mainly Las Vegas.
Both Washington D.C. and Boston were at the bottom of the
top 10 list a few years ago and are now at the top.

Boston also has produced a couple influential government figures from that little college across the Charles River.

What makes San Francisco #2 here? It's arguably last out of these four.
Because most new trends "and movements" in America
come out of California Los Angeles or San Francisco. Cali
cities are always in the forefront.

Well I dont think LA is part of the discussion but would definately agree on the entertainment influence from LA, San Fran not so much, but truly a great city, great technology advancements but honestly wouldn't say is more influential than DC, Honestly in my opinion

DC is 4

Next is really for 5 (between Philly and San Fran)

then for 7,8,9,10 is Houtson/Dallas/Atlanta/Boston

I would also articulate that both Boston and San Fran have a greater sense of self image than the city's really produce, but image is image, I would also suggest Philly actually may suffer from being underestimated in image, thus is why I think the battle for 5 is close and between Philly and San Fran. Those from San fran would look in disdain at this comparison but it is likely the best and sorry Boston but I don't care how many scientists from MIT can spend hours pontificating on the better widget, we already had it built in Philly, but in theory 3 months later your solution was superior. (Can someone from MIT get me a spell check on this site, I can't speel to save my life)

The other folks (sun belts etc) astronomical growth only gets you far, but you are increasing rapidly and will soon be surpassing other great cities I have listed.

And honestly I like all these cities but just find this discussion to have become a bit accademic. And honestly i dont care too much if trenton is in or out of the Philly MSA/CSA or if San Jose is in the SF one, being there is a better assesment, and if Trenton is the differance (no dis-respect because what Trenton makes the world takes) then Philly already lost and we are meddled again in an accademic discussion.

JMHO I know many will disagree, but growing up two opinions framed me, mine and my mothers, both very re-assuring, I must be right

Good day all

Anyone who thinks D.C. is more important than New York City because it "our nation's capital" obviously knows nothing about the world... Even in politics, D.C. is just a place whee pepople with different interests meet. N.Y.C. is where the most powerful interests originate.

I believe this discussion was around # 4 (After NYC/LA/Chicago)

DC is 4

Washington DC is the only city in America that can start
and end an American War , NYC can't even do that.

Next is really for 5 (between Philly and San Fran)

Philadelphia is a financial juggernaut I don't think that people
in America know about the city GDP that simple thing in it's
self would blow the minds of most American.San Francisco
is ahead of Philadelphia with it's cutting edge laws like Prop 13
and Prop 8 Gay Marriage and Domestic Partnerships.

then for 7,8,9,10 is Houtson/Dallas/Atlanta/Boston

Now we get down to the city that thinks it's number (4) Boston
and Houston.

I would also articulate that both Boston and San Fran have a greater sense of self image than the city's really produce, but image is image, I would also suggest Philly actually may suffer from being underestimated in image, thus is why I think the battle for 5 is close and between Philly and San Fran. Harvard University and MIT are not in the city of Boston satellite cities
and suburbs don't count.

When i was in USAF boot camp in San Antonio TX in the 1970's
people from Trenton considered themselves in the Philadelphia MSA
I don't know why the USCB don't consider that to be fact today in
2010 , you folks in Philadelphia are going to have to hold their's feets
to the fire until they see what's right in front of them.

JMHO I know many will disagree, but growing up two opinions framed me, mine and my mothers, both very re-assuring, I must be right

I think that Philadelphia can be a renaissances city pretty much like
NYC and Washington DC as soom as they get a handle on crime , and
bring it down just a little bit more.Philadelphia current crime ranking is
number 15th in the nation.

London and New York City are the financial capitals of the world ,
but Washington DC is the only city in the world that can send the
most powerful nation in the world OFF TO WAR and have the
ability to END A USA WAR.

Isn't the UN headquartered in NYC? At anyrate, staying on topic, DC is definitely number 4 with the 5-8 an extremely tight fist fight between Houston, SFC(bay area), Boston, and Phily.
