I have never been to Albuquerque but have browsed through a few books about it and am thinking about coming out sometime in the next few months to take a look. I have been to Phoenix before and really liked the Southwest feel - architecture, desert, lots of sunshine in particular.
I'm originally from Miami, Florida, and I've been living in the Raleigh, NC area for seven years. However, I'm definitely "not from around here" as is the best way to describe being here in the South. My personal info? Middle-aged, single, ESL teacher (of adults), enjoy casual dining, salsa dancing, Catholic, dog/cat owner, and very used to being around the Latino culture both in growing up and in teaching English too. I'd love to get a list of language schools in Albuquerque that I can contact in advance of taking a trip out there.
I did visit San Antonio once many years ago and liked it too, very much. I'm trying to find a place I can teach/tutor ESL and be in a comfortable, accepting environment, and by that I mean not one where it matters if you are from the north or the south!
If you end up going out to Albuquerque, let me know how you like it. I am also originally from Miami and seriously considering a move to Albuquerque or Austin. If I can save up enough dough, I'd like to visit Albuquerque in October when the Balloon Fiesta is going on. Apparently, the weather is beautiful around that time of year and the horizon is dotted with multicolored hot air balloons. Sounds like my type of place. Good luck!
I grew up in Miami and have lived here in New Mexico for 10 years. I have been to San Antonio several times. San Antonio is nice, it's different than Albuquerque. I think there is a San Antonio vs thread.
Since both of them are favorite cities of mine, I am interested in the comparison of them that people have, although to me it is like comparing apples and oranges.
miamian in nc..I think you need to visit both cities and check them out very closely. They are two very different cities, and have vastly different vibes and atmosphere. That's the only way you will be able to know which one feels better for you.

I don't know when the best time of year really is. Balloon Fiesta has had a few bad years with weather, rain... Last year was great, the year before two days of rain, 1998 every day was perfect. I believe a record number of balloon launches. Here is a video I did in 2007 starting from my back yard, then ran down the block....
My favorite time in all of New Mexico is the fall -- I think it is absolutely the best time to visit.
The aroma of roasting green chiles in the air! The best smell in the world!
We miss the smell of those chiles but I do love the color changes here.
to the OP, both towns are wonderful and both have different things to offer. The only way to figure out what would be best for you is to visit..I do think you might like San Antonio a little better based on what you are looking for, but you will have to deal with the humidity (of course you are used to that) and you won't have the wonderful year round weather that Abq offers. yes, there are 4 seasons, yes, some snow, but nowhere will you get as much sunshine..
