No. As a very big fan of Oakland, not even remotely. Honestly I can't see this thread turning into anything other than Oakland flaming/Boston boosting.

Might as well run Providence vs San Francisco...

This isn't a good comparison. Boston wins. No knock on Oakland, but Boston is just better. I did however vote for Oakland though, my NBA allegiance doesn't allow me to vote for Boston

I tend to agree, but some of the criteria for this thread favors Oakland.

-culture OAKLAND
-diversity OAKLAND
-economy OAKLAND
-nightlife BOSTON
-transportation BOSTON
-history OAKLAND

Furthermore, upon further review the demographics that I usually look at when comparing 2 cities are actually much closer than I would have thought:

Median Household Income, 2011 Census Estimates
Oakland city, CA $50,500
Boston city, MA $49,081

Average Household Income, 2011 Census Estimates
Oakland city, CA $76,693
Boston city, MA $75,394

Persons living in Poverty, 2011 Census Estimates
Boston city, MA 23.2%
Oakland city, CA 21.0%

The Black comparison is actually very interesting:

Black Households, 2011 Census Estimates
Boston city, MA 58,782
Oakland city, MA 49,419

However:

Black Households Earning $200,000+ Annually, 2011 Census Estimates
Oakland, CA 1,182
Boston, MA 456

Also, the educational attainment comparison is MUCH closer than most would probably think:

Adults with a Bachelor Degree or Higher, 2011 Census Estimates
Boston city, MA 42.7%
Oakland city, CA 38.0%

Adult Men with a Bachelor Degree or Higher, 2011 Census Estimates
Boston city, MA 43.9%
Oakland city, MA 34.5%

Adult Women with a Bachelor Degree or Higher, 2011 Census Estimates
Boston city, MA 41.6%
Oakland, CA 41.1%

All in all, Boston is only slightly better educated while Oakland is actually slightly wealthier---most people probably would never have guessed it was that close.

Once again, much much closer than most would ever have thought, and in Oakland's favor no less:

Housing Units valued at $1,000,000+, 2011 Census Estimates
Oakland city, CA 4,662
Boston, city MA 4,359

Now dont get me wrong, Boston is one of the premier urban environments in the US, in my opinion on the same level of Chicago and San Francisco--no doubt.

But its amusing to see Oakland hold its own in wealth, education and luxury homes vs one of the most coveted cities in the nation(Boston).

A lot of good info there. Oakland does get overlooked because of that "other" city on the other side of the bay lol

Bostons Economy is larger and has a lower unemployment rate, Culturally Boston has 2 top rate orchestras, Oakland has 0, and thats just 1 example of how Boston outclasses oakland.
Boston is also safer.
You gave History to Oakland? That is the Dumbest thing i have heard all week.

Well, yes but Oakland is definitely more artistic in my experience.

And yet Oakland still has a higher average income and more millon-dollar homes?

Crime+Wealth means that Oakland appears to be a city of far greater contrasts and contradictions than Boston.

That was a gaffe--Boston definitely gets the nod for history.

PS no need to be hostile cause Ive already stated that Boston is a far superior urban experience, but Oakland is certainly getting in points as far as some pertinent criteria.
