The 2009 Fortune 500 list was released this past April. I'm always interested in seeing how metro areas stack up. Here are the totals for a few metropolitan areas. Feel free to add your metro area or make corrections as I may have made a few mistakes.

I thought about it, but it's too time consuming.

tell me about it.

I actually recall it was around 180. Greater NYC is definitely the corporate king.

Well, in the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area there would be 17. I'm not sure how they could have gotten only 7 even with just the immediate DC Area.

Washington D.C.:
1. Fannie Mae-112
2. Danahaer-213
3. Pepco Holdings-254

Maryland

1. Lockheed Martin-54
2. Constellation Energy-125
3. Mariott International-125
4. Coventry Healthcare-208
5. Black & Decker-408
6. Host Hotels and Resorts-449
7. Legg Mason-500

Virginia

1. General Dynamics-83
2. Capital One-145
3. Computer Sciences Corp.-153
4. AES-158
5. Freddie Mac-220
6. SLM Corp. (Sallie Mae)-331
7. Gannet Media-371

All of Maryland's F500 companies are located in the Metro Area, while Viriginia has more soread throughout the state. MD is actually one of the worst states for business because of its very high corp. tax rates, that and it's unique position of bordering a state with very low business taxes.

I didn't include Richmond (7 Fortune 500 companies) with D.C.

I wonder why KC isn't on the list... it has YRC Worldwide, Sprint, Embarq, and H&R Block.

I added Kansas City with 3. H&R Block didn't make this year's Fortune 500.
