Idaho by a mile... and that comes after living in Aroostook County, Maine for almost 20 years and working along side most of the larger potato farmers in the State.
I'm a potato lover and I have been my whole life. IMO Idaho potatoes are way overrated. You can buy them in all the stores here but why people do is beyond me. We grow all kinds of different kinds here and I enjoy using a variety of them. If I want a dry one like an Idaho I just buy Russet potatoes grown right here. People actually pay around $1 a pound for Idaho potatoes. I have been buying Ontario grown for 20 cents a pound.
The Maine Katahdin Potato is far and away the best potato there is. Forget the milk, forget the butter - all is present in the creamy buttery baked Katahdin potato.
What is Maine known for? It does exist but why? Who ever hears anything about Maine?
Seafood, especially lobster. It's also the northernmost part of the East coast, so I think people at least know that much, and can at least place it easily on a map.
That's what I think of when I think Maine. Also they legalized weed so that's pretty cool too.
Neither of the two are among the most well-known states, but I dont know if Idaho is really known for anything other than potatoes

One major historical event Idaho is known for is the first ski resort in the USA was built there and the world's first ski lift was installed in Sun Valley. Idaho wine is also gaining world wide attention.
Informed people know there is more to Idaho such as this:
