Please honey, the South Bay is filthy rich. Turn over a rock and find a Millionaire. Shake a tree and a Billionaire falls out. Your companies are the envy of the world.
That gives you an automatic front row seat in this place we call the Bay Area-and City snobs know that.
Hey, you post at SSP so you know the attitudes to which I'm refering. Sorry to drag it over here, though.

Just doesn't add up.

That's all good, but diversity doesn't necessarily equate to importance.
I'll give you the ports, but how does that make Miami more important than Boston?
Aside from the presence of Latin culture, what does Miami do that makes it have more international influence than Boston's world-class universities, financial institutions, high-tech firms, and biotech/pharmaceutical companies?
The city's Port of Miami is known for accommodating the largest volume of cruise ships in the world and most cargo between North American and South America and is home to many cruise line headquarters. Miami is also home to the largest concentration of international banks in the United States. Also you have another huge port just 20 miles north in Ft. Lauderdale.
Miami home to the National Hurricane Center and US Southern Command.
The area has two major international airports MIA ranking 3rd in International Passengers Ft. Lauderdale ranking 15th. MIA ranks 4th in the US in total air cargo 1st in total International air cargo and is the main distribution point between Latin America and the world. For a city to be considered the economic and cultural capital of a region and not even be in that region is pretty impressive. Also after LA and NYC Miami media prescence is large.
If it was just based on Finance and Education than Boston wins by a LONG shot. But adding transportation, Cultural influence on not just the United States but all of Latin America I think one could argue Miami is ahead of Boston. There are a lot of factors to things like these and I think one is life experience also. Obviously I am from Miami so it seems biases which I am a bit bias. But Miami is always the underdog I am just trying to find a way to argue for it.
With those facts you gave Boston looks like a winner but thats it. On Foreing Policy Global City Index Boston is ranked 29 Miami 32 it is a close race and Miami importance is only growing.
For the US according to Foreign Policy the list should be:
Even going by your list, which is focused on Foreign Policy and should favor Miami given the port, the US Southern Command, and large foreign-born population, Boston still comes out ahead.
Miami's certainly a big and growing city, but it's not there with Boston quite yet.
Also after LA and NYC Miami media prescence is large.
Yea it's the location for several TV shows, but how does that make it important?

I'd say Boston has had a relatively large cultural influence on our country. For example, the Massachusetts' State Constitution was used to help write the US Constitution. Harvard and other institutions of higher learning have educated people that went on to become extremely influential. Hell, LSD was created in Harvard laboratories...good or bad, the cultural impact of that was huge. To compare the overall impact of the two cities' cultures on the United States is unnecessary IMO because the two major culturally influential cities in the country are NYC and LA, end of story. Miami does have a lot of cultural influence from the Latin world, but again, how does that make them more important?

8. Atlanta (37)
I'm not sure what you're trying to prove with this...since Miami is close to Boston on this list, it's more important? How does that make sense?

I sure would like to see more recent figures. The article contains 1999-2000 data, the economic diversity of both Dallas and Houston has changed over the past decade.
Nice find though.
