Yea gas prices went up, but it wasn't just because of Houston...it was because all of the oil stations that were destroyed in the Gulf of Mexico.

Most were in the Houston area. It's always a big deal when a hurricane is headed toward Houston because of the large amount of oil and energy related companies based here.

One of the main pipelines that supplies gas to Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville comes right from the Gulf South region. When Ike happened, Atlanta had a HUGE gas shortage.

The south as a whole had a huge gas shortage. It was really bad in Texas.

I wouldn't think it would necessarily be because of the companies that are based there, but the oil reserves from those offshore oil rigs...would that be accurate?

I said that and your right ,the oil is more important than the actual companies.

Texas ain't the south! J/K .

But seriously, it was BAD. There were days when people couldn't come to work and telecommuted instead, I had several classes canceled due to the shortage, I spent my birthday at my house, because no one had any gas to meet up anywhere!

My end of the county ran dry, so I had to go to the next county over to get gas, and everyone seem to have had the same idea. It took me an hour to get to the pump, watched a couple of fights break out, and just as I got through pumping gas, they ran out. It wasn't my fault, I swear.

Imagine what would happen if there were an even larger fuel shortage.

It would force us to figure out something else to rely on. In Brazil all cars run on ethanol which I hear uses much less oil and that nation is practically independent of need for much oil from the exterior.

Why couldnt that work here?
