No way that Boston is behind Houston.
Boston and San Francisco should be on the same level.
Boston is way ahead of Philly, Atlanta, etc...
Houston has a higher GDP and more fortune 500 companies than Boston. Houston is also the energy capital of the world. Houston is bigger and its population growth is greater than that of Boston's.
On the other hand, Boston is the educational capital of the U.S. Its a financial center and is huge in Biotech. Has world class hospitals, universities, and museums.
Those two are number six and seven in the US but are still on a tier with the other cities I listed with them. Just my subjective opinion.
As for San Francisco it seems closer to Chicago and DC than it is to Boston, depending on which numbers you use.
Houston's MSA has the same number of square miles Boston's CSA so maybe we should compare Houston MSA with Boston CSA GDP numbers. Truth is, it's nearly impossible to objectively determine the importance of cities at this level.
Boston is way ahead of Atlanta and Philadelphia in cost of living.
What else gives Boston such prestige?
I'll give it education and that is about it.
Atlanta and Philly are bargains for what they both offer. I absolutely see the allure of living in either city.
Boston has alot more going for it than Education though. Medical, research, Biotech, Asset Management, Private Equity, High Tech are just a few of the industries that the city can be viewed as elite in. There are alot of great paying jobs in those sectors that compensate for the high cost of living.

I don't know how much that would help. Much of Houston's MSA is undeveloped land and swamp.

Thank for atleast putting thought into your post.
Boston is a top 10 city but wouldn't put it leaps and bounds ahead of Philadelphia or Atlanta
Atlanta has it positives as well. Multiple fortune 500 companies, Entertainment Industry, Busiest US Airport, Good colleges, and Booming real estate etc.
