Which one would you rather live in, Las Vegas, NV, or Salt Lake City, UT? The differences are obvious, but there are a lot of similarities too: The two cities, only 6 hours apart, are around the same size, and are the largest metropolitan area in their respective states. They're both in the same general vicinity of the country, in the arid west, on the edge of the vast Great Basin. Both have amazing outdoor recreation within a short drive of each city. Both cities have large Mormon populations. Both cities are becoming more diverse as time moves on. Both cities are rapidly growing, although Las Vegas is obviously growing at a much faster rate. So choosya!

Dang, thats a tough one! Im going with SLC just because I find Utah much more beautiful than Nevada. I also prefer SLC's climate to Vegas' too.

I voted for Salt Lake City and think it is a terribly underrated city, although now I am kind of thinking I voted too hard and would maybe prefer Las Vegas.

I don't know...I would live in both of them.

I know Vegas is the type of city that my fellow City Data forumers like to bash, however, it is a good city. I love Vegas' climate...it is a little too blazing hot in the summer, however, it is more mild than Phoenix's, can support palm trees, and is very pleasant in spring, fall and winter and actually can garner a few cold days.

I think SLC is beautiful too, and reminds me in many regards of the layout of Albuquerque, NM - another city I find beautiful and lived in for awhile. SLC's climate is similar to Denver - I prefer the Vegas climate, but can live with the SLC climate.

I think the size of the city swings me over to SLC as Vegas can get a little too crowed and conjested, but I really like both. Actually, I think even though I voted for SLC, I would deep-down pick Vegas, but these are both great cities.

Salt lake... only because of how close it is to ski areas outside of that there is not much to offer.

You also have access to Zion NP, Arches NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Moab, etc, etc. Utah is beautiful!

I'm not sure which one I'd pick, even though I came up with the poll. I think Utah is hands down one of the most beautiful states. I love going to Utah to visit. However, you don't necessarily have to live in Salt Lake City to enjoy Utah's national parks. Zion and Bryce Canyon are actually slightly closer to Las Vegas than they are to Salt Lake. You actually see a lot of Nevada license plates on rental cars at those two parks-- a lot of tourists fly into Vegas and then drive up there. Arches and Canyonlands is almost equidistant between Denver and Salt Lake. SE Utah-- the Monument Valley area is just as close to Albuquerque and maybe even Phoenix as it is to SLC. Wasatch mountains definitely blow away anything around Las Vegas. Sure, Vegas has Mt Charleston, but that doesn't cut it when you compare it the Rocky Mountains. At the end of the day though, I would probably pick Las Vegas-- a more diverse population. Vegas is the world's capital of entertainment and night life. Salt Lake is BORing. SLC is at least over 50% Mormon, and it really does feel like a different culture there. Not that that's a bad thing, but I've always felt kind of weird in Utah, an uneasy feeling like I'm being excluded. I don't think either city is a place I'd want to live in long term, but I'm curious about what others think.

I hear you on Utah being beautiful. The north is great, and the south is absolutely amazing. But you are actually closer to Zion from Vegas than SLC, and probalby equal distance from Bryce. But still...it's hard to argue with SLC over Vegas.
