I was just surfing the "Cities you'd like to see on the hip hop map" thread and I though I'd ask this.

What city gives us the best rap music/artist.

I made a poll with the cities where the "majority" of artist come from? If I left out a city, sorry.

I voted for Miami, cause my 2 favorite artists are from there so i may be wrong. Dallas has one come out every now and then but i mean we don't really have a famous one out there.. I think our most famous is Mr.Pookie...

I vote for Atlanta. For a city/area of its size, it has contributed a disproportionately large amount to the rap industry, including some of the more inventive artists.

Oakland is pretty impressive too. Lots of socially conscious rappers out that way.

Anyone wanna place a bet on how long it takes for someone to pipe into this thread with "Who cares? (C)rap is total garbage!"? My guess is eight posts.

Who cares?

I don't care for rap personally. I don't consider it music; I consider more a form a poetry. While I guess there are different kinds of rap, I think the whole "gangster" lyrics thing sucks and is total trash.

Right now (mid to late 00's) it would be Atlanta, until a new scene pops up and takes it's place. Different cities dominate the rap scene during different cultural phases. The phase were in now is mostly the snap style of rap with artists like Soulja Boy, T-Pain, etc. St. Louis was big in the early to mid 00's with Nelly, Chingy, and J-Kwon. In the late 90's it was NYC with artists like P. Diddy, DMX, and Ja Rule. Mid 90's was more of the Miami bootyshakin' music like the "Tootsie Roll" song. In the early 90's L.A. dominated with West Coast gangsta rap.

Houston is not that much of a contributor either though is it? Mostly LA, Miami, NY, Atlanta, Detroit, and Oakland....

If it's all time then NYC...and any other city even being disscussed is laughable.

Rappers from NYC - Biggie, Tupac, Jay Z, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Fabulous, Camron, Juelz Santana, 50 cent, Fat Joe. Big Pun, Cuban Link, Ja rule, Lil' Kim, Ashanti, Jadakiss, Lloyd Banks, Mobb Deep, Mase, Puff Daddy, Mary J. Blige, Rakim, Grandmaster Flash, Jim Jones, Alicia Keys, KRS-One, Talib Kweli, Lil Mama, LL Cool Jay, Run DMC, J-Lo, Method Man, Papoose, Public Enemy, Raekwon, Remy Ma etc etc

Basically anybody whose anybody is from NYC..............the Bronx is the birth of hip-hop too so nobody can do it better.

As far as today NYC still on top. Many people including myself dont believe that junk from down south to be hip-hop. The hottest artist todays are from NYC..
