What city has the better suburbs for families to live in?
If you can, please tell us why.
Hard to answer this question without more criteria. However, I can say fairly confidently that if your job is in Manhattan, living in the NYC suburbs will shorten your commute over living in the Chicago suburbs. On the other hand, if you work in Chicago's Loop, the commute from the Chicago suburbs will be a lot shorter than the commute from the NYC suburbs. Hope that helps.

Yeah you are right about the criteria. I guess the criteria would be something like education, cost of living, activities for children, the more family oriented suburbs, etc.
Chicago metro is definitely cheaper, so on costs alone Chitown wins easily, even with generally lower Midwest salaries. Weather is better and less extreme in NYC metro .though
Other than that, everything else is pretty much a wash. You can find places in both areas that have good/lousy schools, beautiful/ugly homes, homogenous/diverse suburbs, artsy/pedestrian sensibilities, Democratic/Republican politics, long/short commutes, etc etc.
I would say New York for pretty much anything nature related/outdoorsy/scenic. Access to ocean beaches, mountains, bays, hills, marshland, stuff like that. I think the NYC area is prettier and more interesting to look at, especially coming from north/west/south towards NYC.
