AH HA!!I fgured out why I think.San Antonio has two large military bases.Lackland AFB is where AL Air Force personnel attend Basic training and other training fields. Its one of the largest the Air Force has. Then there is Randolph which is where all our personnel records and such come from. Not to mention the other travelers that would come to a large city anyway for various other reasons. Seeing how this is a HOTELS.COM survey,it stands to reason that it will rank significantly higher than cities. This survey does not take into count travelers that come through the airports, trains, etc. Those people who have alternative modes of lodging;i.e. Bed and Breakfast, friends family, etc.
This survey is not accurate at all.

2008
OVERSEAS VISITORS TO SELECT U.S. CITIES

7 Oahu/Honolulu 6.5%
8 Metro DC Area 5.0%
9 Chicago 4.8%
10 Boston 4.5%

Not so quick on debunking a list that is going by numbers of hotel rooms booked by international and dometic travelers.

San Antonio's 3 military bases really has nothing to do with the number of hotels used by international travelers or domestic. Most military do not check into hotel rooms, they are on base.
Hotels.com is a global source, is a good list , again because it is listing hotels booked by international and domestic visitors, and their preffered destinations.

San Antonio is a top U.S destination with over 26 million visitors. San Antonio would have ranked on the government estimate list for 2008, but since Mexico is not included in the numbers, San Antonio's international percentage dropped. San Antonio is a preferred destination by travelers of Mexico and latin America.

GOOD TRY THOUGH!

LOL.You are truly delusional!!Ill take the U.S.Census any day over a Hotels.com "survey" that has a select market.Hotels only.San Antonio has more travellers than Washington D.C.?REALLY NOW!!LOL!!Does that sound accurate really to you?Yes if there is lodging on base, military personnel do stay on base,But I know for a fact because that was my job at Lackland, that those bases are always filled to capacity.More than half of the people that come in have to be in SEVERAL contracted hotels off base.NEXT..

The census didn't include Mexico and that is a good percentage of international visitors to San Antonio. You don't need to fly overseas to get to the U.S. from latin America.

Anyhow both are surveys, one government the other the hotel industry, both credible sources. I would think the source that is in the business of visitors, the Hospitailty industry, would have a good snapshot of international visitors to the U.S. Nothing said about a select market. This is also the first half of 2009 and trends change, cities can become more popular, rankings change, maybe thats why they do one every year. Another thing to consider, the gov't does not track where the international visitors go once in the U.S., im sure a high percentage do rent cars and move around from city to city. So hotels would have a better understanding where the more popular cities are to international travelers.

The difference between both lists is that one is overseas air travelers and the other is international travelers overall and the beds they sleep in at night.

San Antonio is still ranked as number 10 domestic, and Im sure an updated government list would reflect something in the same ball park, if it's not just including air travel but other sources of travel, the good old automobile. As far as the military personel traveling to San Antonio, a few contracted hotels around the base are not big numbers contributing to the city's 26 million count. With over 26 million vistors, S.A. is in the same league with Washington D.C's, but i'm sure it's still millions less.
