No kidding. Anyone who doubts this is welcome to take a drive out on I-66 through Arlington and Fairfax counties. Behold, the land of the federal contractor.

True, true. I thought all of this was common knowledge, but I guess not.

Los Angeles: 2,700,000
Miami: 2,300,000
San Francisco: 2,300,000
Orlando: 2,100,000
Las Vegas: 1,700,000
Honolulu: 1,600,000
Washington: 1,200,000

CHICAGO? MIA!

Maybe 500,000 at best? Quite pitiful for America's "second city". Yea, what a New York competitor, huh? LOL. I am not trying to be rude, but why would someone fly overseas just to visit Chicago? You want to see skyscrapers, amazing buildings, fabulousness and excitement? New York. It has everything Chicago could only dream of X 2 or 3. Beaches? Miami. Hollywood? LA. Charm? San Francisco. Disney? Orlando. Chicago offers nothing to the average tourist and these statistics back up my opinion. I guess it is a boring farm town (you said it, not me).

New York, L.A., Miami are most-visited U.S. cities by overseas travelers | Oregon Travel News - - Oregon, US & International Travel News - Oregonlive.com

PS, it's impossible to gauge how many Americans are visiting Chicago versus actually going to visit Chicago, so domestic travel patterns never tell the entire picture. These stats foreign stats are quite revealing aren't they? See NYC all the way up there (at nearly 3X LA's visitors) and Chicago missing from the chart? LOL.
Isn't this their release though????

Illinois maintained its ranking as the sixth most popular state for overseas visitors to the U.S. in 2008, hosting 1,419,000 overseas visitors – an increase of 21 percent over the prior year, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Tourism Industries. The City of Chicago hosted 1,368,000 overseas visitors in 2008, a 19 percent increase over 2007 arrivals.

I think we've normally been 9th or so - as most people hit up NYC, LA, then the vacation areas of Florida, Vegas, Hawaii, etc.

"46 million visitors to Chicago" - knowing Chicago and its corrupt nature you probably counted folks commuting to the city by Metra from Wisconsin, Indiana and suburban Illinois.

Let's look at the number of international visitors, While New York is number one, Chicago is nowhere on the list at all!
Yes, NYC received 7.6M foreign visitors while Chicago did not make the list at all, meaning it received less foreign visitors than the last city on the list: Washington with 1.2M visitors.... How about this? How come interntional tourists don't care for Chicago? Do they know something that you don't?

WASHINGTON -- New York got a record-setting 7.6 million foreign visitors last year, making it the U.S. city most visited by travelers from overseas, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.
Following New York on the list of top U.S. destinations for foreigners were Los Angeles (2.7 million); Miami (2.3 million); San Francisco (2.3 million); Orlando (2.1 million); Las Vegas (1.7 million); Honolulu (1.6 million); and Washington (1.2 million), the Commerce Department said.
Miami jumped two spots in becoming the third most-visited destination, showing a 19 percent increase in 2007. Las Vegas and Honolulu traded positions as Honolulu registered a decline, mainly due to a drop in Japanese travel to the U.S. More than 75 percent of Honolulu's visitors are from Japan.
Among states, New York State was first, followed by California with 5.2 million foreign visitors, and Florida, with 4.7 million foreign visitors.
The Commerce Department said spending by international travelers added $122 billion to the domestic economy.

On the list of national attractions Chicago's Navy Pier is number 10 with 8.6M visitors while 36M people visited Time Square making it a number 1 tourist attraction.
Notably, Golden Gate in SF was visited by 14M people....

Why don't you give it up? You know nobody cares for Chicago and this trend is even more visible when you look at international visitors... And yes, San Francisco atracted more foreign visitors (not commuters) than Chicago...

Crying over Califronia and how the US will have to help bancrupted state? California, if independent, would the world's 7th or 8th largest economy, competing with Germany and Japan. That's a huge gross product and it is very unfortunate that so little of this wealth actually stays in California... Most other states could only wish to produce as much...

Please don't tell me about DC bailing out anybody, please...

The lengths you will go to to, the number of identities you will adapt just to bash Chicago, are really pretty pathetic. NOBODY cares for Chicago ??? What kind of world do you live in?

What kind of world you live in??? The number of notable residents of Chicago is shorter than the menu at my local diner. Chicago, the third largest city in the US is less popular with international tourists than Miami, San Fran and DC. As a matter of fact Chicago did not make the list altogether. IOC did not give the Olympic Games to Chicago despite all the personal support by Obama who is beloved and respected overseas more than he is in the US. Finally, the city's own population is running away which is reflected in negative growth... What else do you need to burst your buble?

If we're talking in terms of having a vibrant, large downtown core, then yes, I would agree with the premise of this post. Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia would be next. I wouldn't know how to rank LA because it's a huge city with a lot going on, but it's not very compact or walkable. The closest areas LA would have would be Hollywood or Santa Monica I guess, the actual downtown isn't that vibrant.
