SF is more dense but it really is small city with no significant industry to speak of. They have a small but reputable financial district. It is very popular and very expensive. Very beautiful but also a magnet for freaks and losers.
Chicago is much larger and is the center and what defines chicago land. It has a well rounded economy and though it is not cheap, it has sf beat in cost of living by a long shot. Natural beauty and weather arenot the cities strong points. The architecture is top tier.

But boy are they very strong points for SF. Yesterday was incredible in The City.
Bay area residents refer to san francisco as the city and oakland is called the town. Not sure if anyone has noticed but sometimes when the golden state warriors wear their throw back jerseys its has a logo on the front with a circle that says the city with the golden gate bridge under it.

In my experiences, every large city is called "the city"...as in, "I'm going into the city today...".
