Also its seem Dallas is more a test city and more wordly known than Houston.
Dallas ranks as a test city right up there with Peoria, Illinois. What's so great about that? Why they don't test in Chicago, the melting pot of the Midwest?
Dallas isn't even that well known--many foreigners thought the soap opera was a set in a fictional city named "Dallas" but filmed all over Houston and in L.A. (referred to as Hollywood at the time) backlots.

KerrTown's probably not into sports either...I know most people in the world have never heard of Houston's football team...btw, what is it? I know the old Oilers moved to Tennessee.
So what does it lack? And I disagree with Houston coming behind Austin and San Antonio even in exposure.
It isn't about what it LACKS -
it is about what is has.
It is the most sprawled out city in America, possibly in the world, when measured in terms of commute distances (or maybe it was gas consumption? I forget).
It is basically a big swamp, full of oil and petrochemical refineries.
It has one of the largest ports in the world. Along with S. Louisiana and Beaumont, it is unquestionably the logistics hub of the United States. Lord knows what sort of hazardous material, invasive species, and freaky diseases come through the region.
It has summers that are as hot, humid, and uncomfortable as any in the United States.
In my opinion- NONE of that is desirable, even when contrasted against the city's strengths.
I've been to Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, and I liked them all much better than Houston.
I have alot of collegues overseas for my company. Im going to send a mass email and ask them what city they think of when they think of Texas. Just for grins. Its not scientific or anything, but it might be fun. Most of them are in Australia, Hong Kong, and London. We shall see what they say.
Alright, I got back 39 responses for this little experiment. Again, this isnt scientific data, but a little survey. Of these 11 were from our Sydney office, 13 were from our Hong Kong office, 13 were from our Frankfurt office, and two were from our Sao Paulo office. Take it with a grain of salt. The questions I asked were "what is the city you think of when you think of Texas?" and "which of these cities do you think are the most well known?" The options on that last one were Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. I got some very interesting responses. First the results:
To the question: "What is the city you think of most when you think of Texas?":
23 said Dallas
11 said Houston
1 said Austin
1 said San Antonio
3 said they dont think of any particular city
To the question which city is most well known:
19 said Dallas (reasons given were the Cowboys, Dirk Nowitzki, the TV show, they had relatives there, and the airport)
18 said Houston (reasons given were NASA, the various floods, they had relatives there, Continental Airlines, and Yao Ming)
1 said San Antonio (reason was the Alamo)
1 said he didnt think any of them were well known
Broken down by where they were from:
From our Sydney office: 5 thought Dallas was more well known and 6 thought Houston was more well known
From our Frankfurt office: 7 thought Dallas was more well known, 5 thought Houston was more well known and 1 thought San Antonio was more well known.
From our Sao Paulo office: 1 thought Dallas was more well known and 1 thought Houston was well known.
From our Hong Kong office: 6 thought Dallas was more well known, 6 thought Houston was more well known, and 1 said none of the above.
Make of this what you will. I had alot of fun doing this. I learned alot of what people know about the places. I had 3 people tell me they thought Fort Worth was the name of the airport in Dallas. They didnt know it was a city!

They are the Houston Texans now...whatever thats worth...they are a bottom of the barrel to mediocre rag tag bunch who has always had a pathetically porous offensive line, and whose only real hopes lie in WR Andre Johnson (my favorite receiver in the league). Outside of that they are the most consistently written off, non-noteworthy team in the entire NFL these days, with the Cleveland Browns being hot on their heels for that position. At least Detroit was known for being consistent losers.

LOL cool! I like the little experiment you did. I knew Dallas would come on top, but I was surprised by how much people knew about Austin and San Antonio.

Nice survey...Everything looks about right..but I just couldnt agree with whoever said that (I think it was will.i.am) Austin and San Antonio were more known than Houston. This survey was in line with what I suspect, which is that Dallas is the front runner of Texas' image. Followed by Houston and then the rest of the cities.

I met 2 girls who were from Vietnam over here in NC, they were straight out of Vietnam, they spoke a little broken English, and I told them that I was from Texas, and they were automatically enthusiastic, they said something like this: "Texas, Texas, we know Texas, there are alot of Vietnamese in Texas" and I knew there were alot of Vietnamese in TX, BUT I was STILL shocked that these 2 chicks, that came straight from Vietnam who don't speak very good English would AUTOMATICALLY know about Texas. Every time someone says that Texas isn't know ANYWHERE outside of North America, I just think of what those 2 chicks said.
When I travel sometimes I am asked which country I am from and I always say, "Texas". Then I say, "Dallas".
