They're skylines are nice, but the way the city Glows around the Los Angeles skyline just can't be topped. NYC and Chicago have big skylines, but at night, no. Maybe that's due to those cities being so centralized; LA looks like it has pockets of activity all over the city. Atlanta has a very nice nighttime skyline.. very classy.
I think I know what you're talking about. By the glow of Los Angeles do you mean a shot like this.
LA is perfect for shots like that because the area is so big and the the skyline is for the most part, comparatively, so flat and small over that area. It isn't the only city with that glow around it though, it's just the perfect one for showing it off.
Look at Chicago and New York, you don't see the same kind of thing in a panorama because everyone is so focused on capturing parts of the massive central skylines, but there is more beyond. It's not like they're islands of massive urbanity with almost nothing around.
Hard to find, but these are some shots of New York that aren't so focused on just the Manhattan skyline. Look beyond Manhattan and you see the same thing, look at all the pictures because some are much better than others.
It's no surprise that the central skylines end up being the stars in so many pictures of these cities, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything impressive beyond it.
The pano of LA shows an impressive street grid but you can barely even see the skyline.
Others keep mentioning the fact that LA has the ocean, etc. What does that have to do with the night skyline?
I'm sorry, but Dallas wins this one. LA doesn't light up much of it's buildings. The Uptown/Downtown Dallas skyline at night is very cool and unique.

The funny thing is they just held a Dallas city planners meet a couple of months back on the very topic of whether Dallas' lighting up all of its buildings at night is doing anything to attract pedestrian life at street level. Sure it looks cool from far away driving into the city, but when the sidewalks roll up at 5pm what good does it do to look like Vegas or Hong Kong?
Love that third pic. The one problem with the iconic views from Griffith Park is the downtown skyline--it looks horrible from that angle. Small price to pay for watching the sun set over the L.A. basin from Runyon--it is still a treat after all these years. Truly a sea of lights.
I know L.A.'s skyline won't win any awards for size and density, but it has Dallas beat pretty clearly in both categories.
L.A. all the way. Dallas looks like pure cheese...
