Both are smaller, gritty, Appalachian cities along I-81. I recently visited both and appreciated the potential of each city. I liked the rowhome vibe of the Midtown/Uptown areas of Harrisburg, but also appreciated the bungalow and four-square vibe in some of the Roanoke neighborhoods (Wasena, Grandin Village, Old southwest). Harrisburg gave me that feeling that everything vacates and closes down on the weekends due to state capitol employment. Roanoke didn't seem too lively either-- but maybe that's because I've become used to the density of the DC area. Both cities had decent looking greenway bike trails paralleling their rivers.

How do they compare in terms of livability, affordability, walk-ability/bike-ability, and potential? Which do YOU prefer? Late 20's couple here ready to escape the high prices of the DC area and move somewhere more affordable with access to outdoor recreation. Thanks in advance!

I don't personally know tons about Roanoke. I've been to Harrisburg a few times. It's a pretty good sized city with good amenities for a city of its size. The reason I voted Harrisburg, even without knowing much about Roanoke, is their geographic locations. Harrisburg is in a better location IMO. Close to DC, Baltimore, and Philly. And even NYC isn't all that far. The beach is closer, but it's still located in a pretty mountainous region.

Harrisburg, because it still offers access to similar outdoor amenities, is a bigger area and is located near major areas as well.

I like Roanoke a little better but Harrisburg is closer to the places I like to go. Both good though.
