At the end of the day, there are only two threads in this forum; the one that insults the Sunbelt cities, and the one that exults NYC ad nauseum. Guess which one this is.

No other US City beats New York City when it comes to city life.

I have to disagree with Chicago being a "close second". Even though Chicago is the 3rd largest city in America, I think other cities beat in "urban feel" when it comes to street activity, Philly and SF both beat it this sense.

Look how fat a lot of people in Chicago are compared to the east or west coast cities. It's because they love to drive their cars in Chicago instead of walking. Outside of a couple of nabes in Chicago, for the most part, the streets look kinda of deserted in terms of 'foot traffic'.

For the price, I would say Pittsburgh.

I actually exclude NYC for excessive density, crass commercialism, and annoying yentas. DC, Boston, Seattle, Chicago, SF are the best - with honorable mention for Philly, Portland, and Minneapolis.

I moved from very car oriented Phoenix to Boston and I have to say this Boston ranks up there for city living. I can walk to just about any of the common services I need and on the T you can connect to any number of the squares for what seems to me like 'mini cities' Harvard Square, Kenmore Square etc... It is becoming more commercialized with chains moving in but there are still many areas of Boston anything about the place you are going to eat unless you ask someone first.

"A protruding belly points to prosperity"---anonymus

Whoever said this did not forsee the fast food industry. Haha.

San Fran actually has the second best density behind New York City. Chicago is starting to become thought of as more of a public transit oriented city, but has a long way to go despite having the el system for so long. People do use their cars too much still, and probably always will.

It is true about Chicago. The Loop gets a little quiet sometimes. The action tends to move elsewhere. This never happens in New York. That's why it probably is the 'best city for city life' if you can afford it. Chicago is far more affordable but there is a trade off in overall feel and also in variety when you compare the two.
