Same thing with many areas of New Mexico. Some of the "Hispanics" there are long-time Spanish-Americans who don't really speak Spanish and have been in this country for generations upon generations.
What rnc2mbfl was saying is that in Miami the majority of the Hispanics are Cubans and most Cubans are physically white (Caucasian). And a lot of them have been in America for generations and don't even speak Spanish so you wouldn't know they were Hispanic unless they told you.
I'm assuming New Mexico has a lot of Mexicans that have been their for generations and adjusted to the white-american culture. But you can still tell they're Hispanic by their physical profile.

Most latins definitely still speak Spanish in Miami.
I think there are some "lighter" Hispanics in the Southwest. I believe Ken Salazar's, currently on Obama's cabinet, family has apparently been in Colorado since before the US existed and he looks pretty much just like "a white guy."
Possibly some Mexican-Americans, among those Southwestern Mexicans who've been here for generations, are Basques who are at times lighter than Mexicans. Or possibly they intermixed with Germans or English.
I don't know why he asked it but I can understand. I grew up in a large multicultural city and have since moved to a small community where the majority are not anglo. Several of the "minorities" are resentful, rude, and even hostile towards anglo residents. I am finding myself uncomfortable in my own city and find myself wishing to move somewhere with a "better" demographic, or at least more respectful neighbors.
Most people don't know this, but CT has a pretty big Puerto Rican population, and I'm sure 70-80% of CT is white.
I think Hartford CT has the highest concentration of Puerto Rican residents per capita in the USA. I found this out the hard way back in the mid 1990s, when I was outside the city visiting a friend, and there were road detours for the Puerto Rican Day parade, which virtually shut the city down that day.
I was reading that Oakland California you are finding asians and hispanics moving in while african americans and whites are moving out.
San Francisco is very mixed but I noticed it has gotten a lot whiter over the years. Mostly White, Asian and hispanics in the general downtown area.
I think San Diego or orange county is probubly in the percentile and I didn't feel any racial tension down there. Peoples aren't that friendly (Well the whites were kind of uptight) but I walked into a hispanic neighborhood which was pretty upscale. Nice folks. I walked into one of those small mom and pop mexican grociery stores in Dana Point
