What the hell do you mean by tough? Is tough winning a fight, having enough friends to back you in a fight, having the ability to survive in many situations, coming from a crime-ridden place or something else? Thinking you're tough and actually being tough are two very difficult things but if we're talking about which state as a whole has the most "tough guy" mentality then my vote is for NJ-for the reasons mentioned before about upstate NY. But as far as my definition of toughness, I know people from upstate NY that have the skills to survive in the wilderness for some time and with the street smarts to live in the city as well. But my definition of tough might be different from the ghetto or guido definitions.

And I also know some pretty soft people from suburban NJ.

How do you place everyone in the same group though, its so ignorant.

When I go to other regions I have a good time and live it up, I'm not yelling at people or criticizing every little thing.

Someone sounds like they had an unpleasant run-in with a Jerseyite.

ROFL! maybe a couple of "my new haircut" type of guys at different times. But those were the type that weren't so tough even though they considered themselves tough guys. No mob connections thankfully!

Unless you've lived in suburbs in other states (like I have) then you say for certain that NJ suburbs are "just like any other state".
You didn't get a word I said.

"Just like any state" meaning any state with a good population has some rough suburbs just like NJ does.
But I live in Hackensack, so I know how completely out of the ordinary suburbs in NJ can be.

LOL. I love the stereotype of NJ as unsafe...when it is actually one of the safest states in the country. Too funny.

Newsflash -- there are a handful of irrelevant cities - Camden, Paterson, etc...that may be crime-filled...but bobody goes there. For any reason.

The rest of NJ is beautiful, and safe.

As far as toughness...how is that measured?

The ghettos of the outer boroughs of NYC (Brownsville Brooklyn, South Bronx, etc) versus nice affluent NJ suburbs such as Ridgewood, Chatham, Summit, etc? NY is tougher in that scenario.

But the ghettos of Newark, Paterson, etc versus Manhattan below 100th Street? Um, then NJ would be tougher.

Really can't paint NJ or NY with a broad brush.

NJ easily. Have you ever taken a walk down the meanstreets of Westfield?
Try strolling down the dark side of Rumson....you better be ready to throw down. Don't even get me started on Mountain Lakes

I'm guessing you've never walked through some bad areas of NY.

Rach, I think S5 is kidding.

On the other hand, I heard that all of Somerset County is a war zone, lol.

Good one Seriously, even over-yuppiefied Hoboken used to be an area where bodies were discovered daily...

I do not think you can compare New Jersey to New York State in any aspect: the entire state of New Jersey is less populous than the City of New York alone
