Which is your favorite urban college based on neighborhood location and atmosphere? I am not basing this off of academics, reputation, athletics, campus architecture, campus size, etc.,. This is purely based on where the college is located within the city I want to know what urban college when you have visited do you say "Man it would have been so cool to have gone here and live in this neighborhood". Catch my drift?
Also, before people start whining, I only included colleges that are within the city's limit. This means that at least 90% of the campus has to be located in the city proper. So places like Harvard, Northwestern (most of it), Cal, University of Miami, Washington University, don't qualify because they are not in the city proper.
Well George Washington would have been a better pick then Georgetown since Georgetown really has its own campus and is more of a city limit type of area then GW. Also NYU over Columbia IMO.
I will comment on Georgetown and then give my take on GW.
Georgetown is in a cool neighborhood, its a bit of a walk down hill to get to the shops and places to eat but its a nice lively area. The homes there are just amazing. The downside is there is no good public transit in the area.
GWU is right in the heart of DC. 2 blocks from the white house, next to the state department has its own metro stop etc.. And even though it is in the middle of the city you can still tell you are on a University Campus it is IMO the perfect City/College mix you can get in the United States. You can walk to just about anywhere in the city including Georgetown. Its the best location in all of DC.
UCLA has a nice location. It's in the tony end of Los Angeles, not very far from Hollywood or Beverly Hills. I got disoriented there, though, and lost my sense of direction.
The University of Pittsburgh wins because it has a high-rise skyscraper.
NYU is pretty much the quintessential urban college, much more so than any of the other choices here as it brushes up right next to (and sometimes abrades against) all the other elements of the city rather than dominating its specific part of town.
