The Inland empire always surprised me. I know the counties are large and the population in cluster but at over 4 million it is quite impressive. How closely does this area intertwine with LA.
Out of Curiousity I wanted to see the UA development, is this where the vast majority of population is, because the MSA is downright huge, is there any notable population in the Eastern portions?
And that's about the same population they had almost 40 years ago!!
It' strange to think the Quad Cities and Des Moines metros were the same size when I was growing up in the 1980's, and now Des Moines has 200,000 more people than the Quad Cities. It's also strange to think Omaha is creeping up towards 1,000,000.
I'm surprised at Tulsa, Tucson and Birmingham being at around a million or a little over.
I was surprised that Jacksonville, FL has a population of about 800,000 and Nashville, TN about 600,000. I mean, those are both at least the size of Boston or larger, yet they don't have the same level of worldwide recognition as Boston does. And I'm just talking about the city limits, not the metro area.
I had no idea that Lakeland, Ft. Myers, and Palm Bay (which I hadn't even heard of until now) all had metros of about 500K. Their winter populations must be even larger.

Don't get excited, both Nashville and Jacksonville have city/county consolidated governments. N (1963) and J have both had that gov't style for a long time, but now, there are others. The populations you mention are for the entire counties, not the (old) city limits, as such.
Our Nashville metro is approaching 1.7 million, but I don't think Boston city (or msa) has anything to worry about. lol.
